Can you equate any issue in our world today that causes similar passion,
and deeply set stances/sides as the race issue in the South during the
Civil Rights movement? Where do your yourself stand on the issue and how
does it affect your life?
The Gay Rights Movement reminds me a lot of the Civil Rights Movement. These people are looked down upon and considered "sinful". Also, the people who are most against gay rights are generally from the South and very religious. There are a few sides to this situation. There's the people who are 100% against it and think it's disgusting and horrible. There's the people who it affects, the gays and lesbians. There are the straights who support gay rights 100%. Finally, there are people who couldn't care either way. The group that is totally against it believe that it is against their religion for gays to marry. I believe that the government and religion should be completely separate. The government shouldn't be pressured to discriminate against a certain group because another group of people happens to dislike their way of living. There are numerous religions with hundreds of different beliefs. The government can't please everyone. I hope that in 50 years, people look back and are amazed at how ridiculous gays are treated and the rights they were denied. I hope that I can live to see my best friend enjoy the same rights as I do. I understand that this isn't going to happen over night and I think that it will take several big events to convince the federal government to legalize gay marriage. The gay community is growing to be a strong and some what respected community.I hope that someday they will enjoy the same rights as the rest of America citizens do.
I believe that parenting is all about trust. If you trust your child to do the right thing, then you will have a better relationship with your child. So at an early age, you have to teach them about the right thing to do so you can trust them later in life. Children should be exposed to real world problems in the right ways, so they know what to do if they are ever in that situation. I don't think that kids should be exposed through media, or other children because then the parent isn't going to be there to explain it. Also, the media is often times exaggerated or false. You don't want your children to handle a situation the same way Spongebob does. I agree with Atticus Finch in that you shouldn't beat around the beat around the bush when you child asks you a serious question. If they find out you lied to them, rather than just exposing them to the real world, they will not trust you. Someday, I would like to be a friend to my children yet still an authoritative figure. I want my kids to know that I am with them and not against them. I will expect my children to put their all into everything and anything they do, even if their all is C's. At a young age I will introduce responsibility to my children through a pet. This will show them how to care for something. Also, I want them to have the freedom of choosing their own friends and activities. I want my kids to e able to make their own decisions and mistakes so that they can learn from them rather than me telling them. In conclusion I would like to be a approachable parent yet still enforce rules.
Growing up in the suburbs hasn't given me much first hand experience with racism. However, I recently starting a job at Dunkin Donuts and was surprised at what I found. Most of my coworkers are from a handful of different countries and the particular store where I work is owned by an Indian couple. In the 5 weeks I have worked at Dunkin Donuts, I have gotten countless comments about race. Some people joke "You're not Indian. How'd you get this job?" or "I didn't know white people could work here." These comments are offensive alone, but they are said in front of my coworkers and my manager, who all happen to be of different races. I am utterly embarrassed that something like that would even be brought up, especially in front of some of the sweetest people I know. Also, this is not just white poeple making these comments. Blacks and whites alike have made comments about race. I don't know if they see it as normal to make these comments as small talk or if they are strictly thinking about insulting someone when they walk through the doors of Dunkin Donuts. Whatever their intention is, I know that it is completely unacceptable. I believe that in Modern America, we are aware of the past racism between blacks and whites, but there is new racism. Hispanics, Koreans, Indians, Chinese, and so many other races are being discriminated against.
