Freedom Riders

Can you equate any issue in our world today that causes similar passion, and deeply set stances/sides as the race issue in the South during the Civil Rights movement? Where do your yourself stand on the issue and how does it affect your life?
The Gay Rights Movement reminds me a lot of the Civil Rights Movement. These people are looked down upon and considered "sinful". Also, the people who are most against gay rights are generally from the South and very religious. There are a few sides to this situation. There's the people who are 100% against it and think it's disgusting and horrible. There's the people who it affects, the gays and lesbians. There are the straights who support gay rights 100%. Finally, there are people who couldn't care either way. The group that is totally against it believe that it is against their religion for gays to marry. I believe that the government and religion should be completely separate. The government shouldn't be pressured to discriminate against a certain group because another group of people happens to dislike their way of living. There are numerous religions with hundreds of different beliefs. The government can't please everyone. I hope that in 50 years, people look back and are amazed at how ridiculous gays are treated and the rights they were denied. I hope that I can live to see my best friend enjoy the same rights as I do. I understand that this isn't going to happen over night and I think that it will take several big events to convince the federal government to legalize gay marriage. The gay community is growing to be a strong and some what respected community.I hope that someday they will enjoy the same rights as the rest of America citizens do.
